Hedge Planting - Purbrook Gardens
Purbrook Gardens, Purbrook

This month we will continue our wildlife garden project at Purbrook Gardens by planting a mixed native species hedge in front of the wall next to the Co-op and along the side facing Purbrook House.

We will plant three rows of a variety of native species trees with hawthorn and blackthorn in the middle.  The objective is to create a dense hedge that will provide nesting habitat for birds, flowers giving nectar for insects, a food source and year-round colour.

We will also spread wood chips to suppress weeds and help to retain moisture in the soil.

Meet at Purbrook Gardens at 9.30am

Boots or stout shoes are advised.

We welcome new volunteers, so if you would like to join us please come along.  You do not need experience of conservation work and there is no obligation to attend every task.  Please refer to the FAQs or use the Contact Us form to request more information.

Hedge Cutting - Penjar Pond
Penjar Pond, Purbrook Waterlooville

In February we will cut the hedge in front of the fence at Penjar Pond.  The hedge was last cut two years ago and is now quite impressive.  By cutting it in early February we will avoid disturbance to nesting birds whilst retaining the fruit for as long as possible.  We will also spread wood chips to suppress weeds and help to retain moisture in the soil.

Meet at Penjar Pond at 9.30am.

There is a free car park on the opposite side of Ladybridge Road.

Boots or stout shoes are advised.

Fruiting Hedge Maintenance
The Bog, Purbrook Waterlooville

We will clear around the fruiting hedge and spread some wood chips to suppress weeds and help retain moisture.  Our hard work in previous years has paid off and there should be far less to remove this time.  We hope to receive some instruction in pruning and to use the hedge for practice.

Meet at The Bog at 9.30am

Free parking is available in the public car park behind The Woodman public house.

Removing Spanish Bluebells
Privett Road, Widley Waterlooville

This time we hope to remove the last of the Spanish bluebells and hybrids from the small woodland to the side of Widley Gardens.  A small number of Spanish bluebells remain in Sandy Dell and we have not touched those along the edge of Privett Road.  When we have removed all we can we will be able to replant with English bluebells.

Meet at the corner of Privett Road and Widley Gardens at 9.30am
